Buckeye Power is a generation and transmission (G&T) cooperative wholly owned by the 25 rural cooperatives serving Ohio. Here are some important facts about its power plants.

Cardinal Generating Station
Cardinal Generating Station

• The Cardinal Generating Station near Brilliant, Ohio, on the Ohio River is made up of three units. Buckeye Power owns Unit 2 and Unit 3.

• Unit 2 began serving member load on June 27, 1968.

• Unit 3 began serving member load on September 20, 1977.

• Investment is $1.9 billion.

• Unit 2 has a generating capacity of 600 megawatts (MW). Unit 3 is a 630-MW unit. Combined, Buckeye has a capacity of 1,230 MW at Cardinal Plant.

• Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems were installed in 2003 to remove nitrogen oxides from the flue gas, reducing smog.

• Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) system installation is complete on both units. The scrubbers remove SO2 and, in series with the SCRs, mercury from the flue gas.

• Number of Cardinal employees (all 3 units)—309.

• Cardinal is a base load facility designed to be available around the clock to provide low-cost power.

Robert P. Mone Generating Station
Mone

• The Mone Plant is located near Convoy, Ohio, in Van Wert County.

• The plant consists of three General Electric 7FA combustion turbines with a nominal capacity of 170 MW each, for a total plant capacity of 510 MW.

• The plant’s primary fuel is natural gas; the alternate fuel is distillate oil.

• The plant began operation in 2002.

• Number of employees—5.

• Investment is $195 million.

• Mone is a peaking facility used during times when there is high demand, generally for a few hours on the hottest and coldest days.

• Peaking facilities are less expensive to build than base load facilities but more expensive to operate.

Greenville Electric Generating Station
Greenville Electric Generating Station

• The Greenville Plant is located near Greenville, Ohio, in Darke County.

• The plant consists of four Pratt & Whitney FT-8 Twinpac combustion turbines with nominal capacity of 50 MW each, for a total plant capacity of 200 MW.

• The plant began operation in 2000.

• Buckeye purchased the facility in April 2007.

• The units are capable of operations in synchronous condensing mode to supply or absorb reactive power.

• Number of employees—5.

• Investment is $58 million.

• Greenville is a peaking facility used during times when there is high demand, generally for a few hours per day on the hottest and coldest days.

OVEC — Clifty Creek and Kyger Creek Generating Stations
Kyger Creek Generating

• The Clifty Creek and Kyger Creek plants began operation in 1955.

• The Clifty Creek Plant is located near Madison, Indiana.

• The Kyger Creek Plant is located near Gallipolis, Ohio.

Buckeye Power Generating has purchased the right to 18 percent of Ohio Valley Electric Corporation’s (OVEC) capacity.

• Investment is $348 million.

• Clifty Creek consists of six 217-MW units.

• Kyger Creek consists of five 217-MW units.

• SCR systems were added to 10 of the 11 units in 2003.

• Number of Clifty Creek employees—353.

• Number of Kyger Creek employees—322.

• Kyger Creek and Clifty Creek plants operate as base load facilities.

• FGD systems have been completed at both facilities.
