About Your Cooperative
Guernsey-Muskingum Electric Cooperative is owned by the people who receive electric service from their cooperative, which is operated for the benefit of its member-owners on a non-profit basis. Like thousands of other member-owned cooperative businesses around the country, Guernsey-Muskingum Electric focuses on service instead of profits.
The mission of Guernsey-Muskingum Electric Cooperative, Inc is to provide quality electric energy and other services at the lowest cost consistent with sound economy and good management.
Board of Directors
A seven member Board of Directors, comprised of cooperative members elected by their fellow members, governs Guernsey-Muskingum Electric. All active members of the cooperative are eligible to run for election to the Board of Directors. The election process takes place annually during the cooperative's Annual Meeting of Members.
Guernsey-Muskingum Electric Cooperative is a non-profit corporation owned by its members. As owners of the co-op, members are responsible for providing a portion of the funding necessary to operate the business. Co-op members contribute this funding with their Capital Credits.
The co-op pays all of its annual operating expenses from revenues, and the money left over at year-end is divided up and credited to each member based on how much electricity each purchased during the year.
The members' Capital Credits represent their share of the ownership of the cooperative. This money is used by the co-op to fund additions and improvements to the system until it is returned to the members on a delayed basis.
Cardinal Generation Station
Guernsey-Muskingum Electric Cooperative receives the electricity it distributes to its members from Buckeye Power's Cardinal Generating Station located on the Ohio River near Brilliant, Ohio. The Cardinal plant, which burns coal to produce electricity, incorporates state-of-the-art technology and is one of the cleanest coal-fired generating plants in the world. Buckeye Power is the Generation and Transmission cooperative that supplies power to Guernsey-Muskingum Electric.
