What Equipment Do I Need For
My Home?
It is recommended that homes use two stages of protection.
Both are available through your Cooperative.
Stage 1: Installation of a heavy
duty suppressor, specifically designed to reduce or eliminate a "surge" or "spike"
on the electric line before it enters your service panel. This stage will increase
the life of your equipment and provide protection to major appliances.
 |
Stage 1 may not provide enough protection for your sensitive electronic equipment.
|
 |
Electronic equipment is becoming more complex and sensitive to surges.
|
 |
Surges can also come in on the phone or television cable lines. For these reasons,
it is highly recommended that homes also use Stage 2 protection.
|
GMEC offers a lease program for a Leviton Meter Socket Adapter.

Stage 2: This is an assortment
of plug-in strips and products that are placed throughout the home to protect televisions,
VCR’s, computer systems, etc. The types and quantities of these products will vary
from home to home. A list of available pieces follow, or ask your Cooperative about
unique applications.
Is My Home Protected 100% Against Damage?
These devices (like any surge protection product) are not designed to handle direct
lightning strikes. They will not keep clocks from blinking after an outage or save
energy. So far, nothing man-made has been completely fool-proof from the forces
of nature. They will, however, provide protection against common "surges" and "spikes"
and are warranted to pay for damaged equipment if they fail.
Affordable
protection . . . from transient voltage spikes.
Transient Spikes Can Happen Anywhere, Anytime
There Are Sources of Transient Spikes Everywhere.
Spikes are fast-moving high-energy disturbances lasting
only tiny fractions of a second, but they pack a real wallop that can destroy your
expensive electronics outright, cause malfunctions, and result in premature equipment
failure.
From outside your home, lightning can cause enormous spikes on the electrical lines,
but there are dozens of sources inside the home too.
Spikes are created by washers, fans, air conditioners, shop tools, refrigerators,
fans, motors, mixers or virtually any electrical appliance that can be turned on
and off.
Which Equipment Is Especially Threatened?
Unfortunately, your expensive electronics are at greatest risk. Minor spikes don't
affect things like fans, motors, or light bulbs. They're dangerous only to equipment
with microchips, including:
 |
Personal computers and their peripherals, like modems and printers
|
 |
Stereo equipment, tape decks, tuners, CD Players
|
 |
Televisions, VCRs, video game decks
|
 |
Microwave ovens
|
 |
Telephone answering machines
|
 |
All other household equipment equipped with electronic chips
